When Social Security Disability Benefits Are Delayed

If you were awarded Social Security disability benefits several months ago, but you still have not received the benefits, there are three things you can do:

  1. Contact your representative(s) in Congress. Because Social Security benefit issues are so common, each Congressperson has a staff member who specifically deals with the Social Security Administration. A congressional inquiry may be good way to speed up payment.
  2. You or your San Diego disability attorney can contact a supervisor at your local Social Security office. The supervisor can look into payment issues.
  3. You or your attorney can send a fax to the payment center. If your payments are issued by the Office of Central Operations (OCO) in Baltimore, fax a letter directly to one of the processing units, called modules or “mods.” Modules are assigned according to your Social Security number.

The Social Security Administration recommends that claimants fax an inquiry about your case if you have not received a Notice of Award within 45 days of the date of the decision granting benefits at your disability hearing. If you receive no response to your inquiry 45 days after the first fax, send a second fax to the same fax number, but this time address it to the attention of the module manager, and enclose a copy of the first fax. If there is still no response 45 days after the second fax, send a third fax to the same number addressed to the Division Program Manager. Enclose copies of all earlier faxes you sent. If there is still no response, send a fax 45 days later to the Center for Program Support at 410-966-0715, and include copies of all previous correspondence.Have more questions?
